An unknown startup accuses Facebook for stealing his name Meta

A company called Meta Company published an open letter claiming that Meta, the new name of the group Facebook, tried to redeem his name. She says she refused, and that Facebook would have done it anyway. However, there were few online traces of the infamous “Meta Company” until last week.

The official Meta Company website consists of just one large press release. This is a page titled “”, which was uploaded on November 1, 2021.

Three days earlier, Mark Zuckerberg’s group announced that they were changing their name to become Meta, an entity that would include both the social network Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Oculus (whose name disappears in passing), and which corresponds to his ambitions of metaverse.

The Meta Company press release is signed Nate Skulic, who introduces himself as the founder. He affirms that Facebook would have offered to buy his brand for the “last three months”: “”, he says. The man assures in particular that the offer of Mark Zuckerberg would not have been high enough for “”.

The press release from the strange company Meta Company

The multinational would also have refused to communicate to Nate Skulic the reasons for this takeover (and, initially, its own name) and what it wanted to do with its brand.

Ironically, the end of the page links to social media accounts … of the Meta group, Facebook and Instagram. When you click on them, you notice that they were all created just a few days ago, and are only fed by Nate Skulic’s press release. Could this be a communication stunt to try to grab some money, by surfing the new popularity of the name Meta?

Does Meta Company Really Exist?

Several clues indeed suggest that the startup Meta Company was until now more an empty shell than a flourishing company.

According to our research, a man called Nathaniel Skulic did indeed start a business in September 2013 called META LLC. But since then, the startup has hardly done anything since.

On domain name verification sites, we see that the site was registered in 2014, but that it was updated on October 31, 2021. We can also see on the WayBack Machine site that ‘he has experienced much more activity since November 1 than over the past ten years.

“”, Insists Nate Skulic’s press release, however, ignoring the fact that his company was so far … not really known in the media. The man then continues with relatively little moderation: ”

Beyond this case, it should be remembered that there are many companies in history that have taken hold of the name “meta”. From 2013 to 2019, a firm called Meta had embarked on virtual reality, before going out of business. But others still exist, such as, a digital design agency, or also meta wine, which makes wine.

After Mark Zuckerberg’s announcements at the end of October, another startup called Sense had also let it be known that the Meta logo (which was also designed in 3D) was very close to his.

We reached out to Meta Company to find out more about what the company was doing prior to November 1, 2021. We will update this article if there is a return.
