Netatmo welcome

+ Face recognition function

+ The discreet design

The first Netatmo Welcome of the name was launched in 2015, before evolving suddenly with updates to its software … but without any hardware evolution. It therefore knows a quiet life cycle, which does not prevent it from always being well referenced in stores and on online sales sites at 199 euros.

The camera of Netatmo plays the difference card through the intelligence it promises thanks to its function of face recognition. It’s where it got its name, Welcome : she knows how to identify people who come home.
Positioned in front of the front door, it scans the faces of people crossing the doorstep and, if necessary, alerts the owner (s) of the camera via the application that Margot is back, for example. A feature that aims to reassuring worried parents to know if the children have come home from school. This technology also works quite well. After one learning phase during which we associate (via the application) names with faces detected by camera, errors become more and more rare.

This identification mechanically allows categorize alerts. We won’t worry about knowing thatEmeric came home, via a notification. However, it will be quite different if the notification evokes an unknown face.

In this case, it is necessary to take the necessary measures and fortunately the application reacts quickly. Again, thanks to a good internet connection, you can quickly access the video stream. First in a degraded definition (360p) whose low speed allows you to quickly see what is happening, then in a resolution in 1080p of good quality. At least when the light is there, because in the dark, the result is not great …

This is also where we realize that the manufacturer has every interest in upgrade the hardware of your product if he doesn’t want to lose face in front of the newcomers … especially Chinese.

Let us add that we noted, during our tests, that the Wi-Fi module was not very fresh either. The scope of the link finds its limits relatively quickly and the rise in quality of the video stream, mentioned above, is slow to take place if the signal from its box (router or any other access point) is not strong enough. Some may nevertheless fall back on the use of an Ethernet cable since the camera has an RJ45 connector.

Note that the camera does not work with an online storage offer. All videos are stored on an 8 GB MicroSD memory card (delivered). Better to strategically position the thing so that the thieves don’t leave with it.

Finally, the last force of the Netatmo Welcome – in addition to its compatibility with Apple Home Kit and Google Assistant – lies in the fact that, like the Somfy product, this camera can be integrated into a universe of connected products. Coupled with Netatmo’s door and window opening sensors, it can automatically start recording and alert its owner in the event of an intrusion.

+ The electronic tracking function

+ The ergonomics of the application

– The high price

– The obligation to subscribe to the Cloud offer

The indoor Nest Cam IQ is one of the high-end video surveillance cameras, as evidenced by its price of 350 euros. In an attempt to explain this price, the Google subsidiary points to superior intelligence, very good image quality and a people tracking function.

All this is made possible thanks to an advanced hardware platform, including a 4K sensor and a six-core processor offering good computing power to the camera.

Nest Cam IQ indoor 2

Please note that said 4K sensor is not used to broadcast an image in ultra high definition. No, the camera films and transmits a Full HD (1080p) stream, but it uses the surplus of pixels to digitally zoom in the image and thus follow the evolution of an intruder in the room. And the result is quite impressive. Obviously, the fact that the camera does not have a real motorized head limits the scope, but if it is ideally placed, the surveillance will be of very good quality. We also appreciate its audio quality, captured by three microphones and which makes it possible to clearly distinguish what is said in the room.

Unsurprisingly, the 4K sensor and HDR image processing provide a beautiful image Day and night. The infrared diodes are powerful and allow you to see far into a room. Like the Netatmo Welcome, this camera Nest offers a face identification function. Again, the goal is to train the camera daily to detect familiar people and then be able to categorize the alerts.
The manufacturer has obviously done the necessary for its Nest app is the most accessible. The menus are simplified to the maximum. It only takes two clicks in the application menus, for example, to declare that you are leaving the house and thus activate monitoring. In short, software side, it is successful and it is not really surprising on the part of such a specialist.

However, despite the very high price of the camera (350 euros!) Nest does provide that 30 day trial at his service Nest Aware which not only includes continuous video recording, but also lets you enjoy all advanced camera functions such as familiar face alerts, close-ups, or creating time-lapse videos. To take advantage of these services after 30 days, you will need to subscribe to one of the subscriptions offered by Nest. Count, for example, 30 euros for 30 days of activation, or 300 euros for the year and that for a single camera. Add 15 euros or 150 euros respectively for additional cameras. It is a high cost that Mr. Google.

netgear Arlo

+ Free storage offer

+ The quality of the wireless link

+ Video stream processing

Arlo cameras are among the most popular CCTV products. And for good reason these cameras have above all a powerful Wi-Fi module which allows them to be ideally positioned in the house without really having to worry about the quality of the connection.

Unless you have a house on several separate floors of concrete slab, everything should be fine. Of course, if you have an Ethernet connection within range of the camera, we recommend that you use it with the wired version of this camera:Arlo Q Plus (240 euros), a little more expensive therefore than this Arlo Q classic sold for 150 euros.

netgear Arlo capt 1
netgear Arlo capt 2

The other reasons why the products Arlo have the rating are on the side of the image quality andstorage offer.

Image quality side first. TheArlo Q has a sensor that allows it to film in Full HD day and night. Obviously, the quality is much better during the day, even if you should not expect a Full HD rendering as you can have on your TV or with videos shot with a recent smartphone. Here, the weight ratio of the flow / quality is very important so that the result is as fluid as possible, whatever the Internet connection of the home.

On this topic Arlo has also done a good job by integrating an algorithm which constantly adapts the size of the flow to the conditions of the line.
At night, obviously the quality is worse. However, this remains adequate. The range of infrared LEDs is several meters and therefore makes it possible to identify a subject even far enough in the room.
Last but not least, free video storage in the cloud Netgear within the limit of seven days and up to a maximum of five cameras. Beyond that, you must subscribe to one of the paid offers. The offer “ First »Will cost you nine euros per month or 89 euros a year and allows you to connect ten cameras with a 10 GB cloud. Count 14 euros per month or 139 euros for 100 GB of storage space allocated to up to 15 cameras.
Finally, all its qualities have a price, quite high, and it is 240 euros for this Arlo Q Plus.

Xiaomi Mi Home Security

+ The quality / price ratio

+ Satisfactory image quality

+ The motorized head

– The painful cutting of videos

– No cloud storage on the basic offer

Once again, the Chinese manufacturer has produced an excellent value for money product. Sold for only 40 euros, the Mi Home Security nevertheless ranks among the best video surveillance cameras in our comparison.

The price gap is such that we end up even wondering if other manufacturers should not seriously review their prices down … especially as the Xiaomi sometimes does better than other much more expensive models.

It is important to know that for 40 euros, you will have neither charger nor memory card inside the box. On the one hand, you will need to find a USB adapter (maybe you have some lying around in a drawer) to feed it and, on the other hand, add a MicroSD card. For our part, we installed a memory card for him. 16 GB (a minimum however, in our opinion) and we plugged its USB connector into the appropriate port of our Internet. An ideal configuration to take advantage of the full power of Wi-Fi (the camera is not Ethernet compatible), provided that the two meters of the power cord are sufficient.

Xiaomi Mi Home Security
Xiaomi Mi Home Security

What makes the value for money even better is the fact that the camera is motorized. From the mobile app, you can rotate your head up and down and left to right which allows to cover the room on 360 degrees. Again, probably thanks to the quality of our fiber link, we are very satisfied with the response time of the camera. The clicks on the arrows to move the lens respond very well – note that we are on a remote connection in 4G, on our smartphone, and not on the same home network.

But make no mistake, this motorized head is absolutely not able to follow an intruder in a room, except if you have a Chinese account : At this price level it would have been too good to have a motion detector. Even if a Yi offers an alternative for a few euros more.

However, nothing to report on the quality of the image. For a product at 40 euros and with a video stream indicated, by the application, at a few KB / s, the result is surprisingly very suitable.

Not everything is rosy. The low price of the Xiaomi Mi Security is also linked to the fact that the manufacturer does not offer no cloud storage service. If the burglars leave with the camera, you won’t have any more video unless, perhaps, you have taken the time to configure the backup function on a NAS, that the camera offers.

This is what we did quite easily with our Synology home server … But what does not solve another problem: each time we receive a notification, when the camera detects a noise or a movement, you must consult the history of recordings and that’s where it gets painful. In fact, unless you manually define time periods during which you want to activate monitoring, the camera is constantly filming. These are then 60 files of 1 minute each which are stored on the micro SD card and which must be browsed. You will understand, it quickly becomes very tedious.

Finally, the Mi Home Security 360 is compatible with some voice commands fromAmazon Alexa and Google Home. With this last assistant, we were able to activate or stop the surveillance of the camera, without having to use the mobile application, simply by speaking with our Google Mini.

Somfy One

+ The possibility of adding home automation elements

+ The quality of the videos

+ The fluidity of the signal

– The low power of the siren

– The price

Somfy is a well-known brand in the world of home automation and video surveillance. It is also from these experiences that the manufacturer has created a three-in-one product (or rather two and a half-in-one, but we will come back to this), the Somfy One.

This funny object, which vaguely resembles an enclosure, combines both the functions of a small home automation system, of a camera and a alarm… all of this in a sold product 250 euros.

Let’s quickly evacuate this last point: the siren integrated in Somfy One do not yell loud enough to alert your neighbors in the event of an intrusion. On the other hand, if the camera films the front door or a sensitive access point while you are sleeping, the siren will have the merit of waking you (no doubt); What a mobile app notification doesn’t do quite as well – especially if you’re used to turning your mobile whistle off overnight.

Regarding video quality, the Full HD rendering of this camera does not call for real reviews. The rendering is good, the sharpness suitable and the field of vision quite wide to scan a room provided you have carefully studied its location …

The app doesn’t have a lot of features, but the basics are there, including interactions with Amazon Echo, IFTTT or the stamped products ” works with Nest

Somfy One
Somfy One

More importantly, as we said, this three-in-one camera can also act as a home automation system. To do this, you must then pair sensors that you can either acquire as an option, or buy from the start by opting for the pack. Somfy One Plus (399 euros). If necessary you will find in the pack an opening sensor to place on a door or a window, as well as a badge which acts as remote control. Nothing to say about the latter except that it allows you to activate or deactivate the monitoring functions (and therefore the siren) without having to go through the application.

Regarding the sensor, that’s another story. The latter, initially developed by the company MyFox Somfy has bought, offers some really interesting possibilities. Not only does it detect openings, but above all, it prevents intrusions.

A sensor integrated in the door sensor can detect if someone knocks on the door (it detects the difference between knocking and knocking), tries to pierce the lock or to trash the amount at the crowbar, for example.

In these cases, it will activate the siren, but may also perform a home security. This is the strength of home automation since Somfy also offers accessories to control its shutters to secure all sensitive areas or some electrical outlets that will allow, for example, turn on multiple lights to try to panic the burglars. Not bad … even if all this obviously involves an additional cost.

Ring Stick up cam

+ Product design

+ Video quality

+ Interior and exterior compatible

– The obligation to subscribe to a subscription

– The quality of the two-way audio system

The American manufacturer Ring is very active in the market for video surveillance cameras. If its representation (or its beautiful highlight) on Amazon surprise you, and know that this is actually completely normal. The online retail giant bought Ring in early 2018 for a billion dollars. Google owns Nest, and Amazon put the ring on his finger at Ring: that’s it for the presentations.

To return to our sheep, the Stick Up Cam tested here presents a positive point at the outset: the quality of its finish. Successful design and quality design are also arguments that characterize the majority of the brand’s products. In this case, the camera is in the form of an elegant black and white cylinder (6 cm in diameter and 9.7 cm high) which will easily find its place among your furniture.

The Stick Up Cam, can be used indoors and outdoors, in any position (or almost). Its articulated foot and its wall support delivered in the box, allow to easily install the product on a piece of furniture, a shelf, on the wall or on the ceiling. Head up or head down, and anywhere, since this camera is offered both wired and wireless… and at the same price of 199 euros.

We have received for test the version running on a battery and if by chance your wish is to install it outside, the manufacturer offers a pack including a solar panel at 239 euros. Not bad for not having to worry about anything!

Ring Stick up cam capt 2
Ring Stick up cam capt 1

In terms of image quality, this Stick Up Cam is among the most effective. Its Full HD image is clean and its relatively wide field of vision (115 degrees horizontal and 60 degrees vertical) combined with the installation flexibility provided by this wireless version, allows you to monitor a large room.

Two criticisms, however: image quality in night mode is not convincing and we noticed that its noise reduction technology and its two-way microphone were not very effective.
The sound picked up by the camera is often very choppy, which is particularly frustrating when it comes to listening to what’s going on in the room – especially to identify a name. Conversely, the camera speaker, which allows you to be heard by speaking through the mobile application – to alert burglars that they have been filmed and that you have notified the police for example – is ofa rather anecdotal power.

Ring’s mobile app is quite effective. It is not in the frills, but most of it is easily accessible. Recorded videos can be brought back to the smartphone or shared directly with a loved one. Ring has even provided a quick sharing function “with a neighbor”.

Overall therefore, the Ring doesn’t really have to be ashamed of its competitors at the same prices. But like many models, the Stick Up Cam is only of interest if it is combined with a subscription. However, after the 30-day trial period, the recordings are no longer stored in the Cloud.

Without subscription, the camera remains active, but it only delivers notifications. These will invite you to view the live video stream, but it will impossible to review the action that triggered the camera. To take advantage of all the functions, you must subscribe to one of the two offers. The first one, Protect Basic billed three euros per month or 30 euros per year, allowsrecord the flow of a device (camera or doorbell connected elsewhere). The offer Protect Plus, billed ten euros a month or 100 euros a year, permanently records images from an unlimited number of Ring devices.

Finally, if by chance you have a device Amazon Echo With a screen, such as Echo Spot or Echo Show, you can ask Alexa to display the camera image on it.

TP-LINK KC120

+ Two days of free registrations

+ Compatibility with personal assistants

+ The wide-angle lens

– Very good image quality

– Billing in dollars from Kasa Care

Like Netgear, TP-Link is one of those network specialists who have extended their technology to the world of connected homes. Our attention was focused on the Kasa Cam 120 (KC120), a rather mid-range product, which is currently offered at a discounted price.

Initially sold for 150 euros, this camera is sold for less than 100 euros on many online sales sites. Do we have to fall for it? This is what we wanted to verify.

Aesthetically, this Kasa cam seems to be mistaken for the first Nest Indoor camera. Its swiveling head is mounted on a magnetic foot and also swiveling, allowing fix it as well on a flat surface, as on a wall or ceiling. The manufacturer also provides adequate support for this.

Also, the good news is that the power cable measures 2.9 meters, which should facilitate installation.

TP-LINK KC120
TP-LINK KC120

The image quality of this camera is quite arbitrary. Its sensor films in Full HD and the result is suitable by day. At night, no miracle, the result is unfortunately much worse: overall rendering is too rough. The small surface available on the front of the camera limits the possibility of multiplying infrared LEDs, and this is reflected in the result.

However, the KC120 does not have to be particularly ashamed in the face of certain competitors. Despite its small size, it makes the difference in the coverage area. 130 degree optics cover a wide field of vision and thus monitor the largest rooms as much as possible. Note that it is also possible to create vigilance zones (this is the case for many models) to avoid false alerts.

Other advantages of this KC-120 : its online storage offer and its compatibility with voice assistants. Without a memory card, the camera films and transmits its images to the TP-Link servers. The good news is that you will not have to pay to take advantage of these services, however in a limited version.

The manufacturer indeed offers a basic formula in which your videos are kept for two days, within the limit of 1 GB, or approximately 4 hours, of Full HD video. For more space, however, you must subscribe to a paid formula … billed in dollars.
In this case 14 days of recording (limited to 14 GB, or 60 hours in Full HD) are billed four dollars per month, or 3.5 euros at the current price, or 40 dollars a year. For 30 days of recording (30 GB – 128 hours), the service is billed for seven dollars, or 6.15 euros, in the Premium version of Kasa Care.

Finally, the KC-120 is compatible with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. Understand that if you have an Alexa speaker with a screen (Echo Spot or Echo Show), you can ask it to consult the video stream from the camera. The same will apply if your TV, for example, is compatible with Google Assistant.

Yi Home 1080p Dome Camera

+ The price

+ The motorized head

+ Movement tracking

– Poor night quality

– The short length of the power cable

Here is a camera that could have seriously overshadowed the model from Xiaomi … and all the competition elsewhere. First, because the Home camera of the Chinese manufacturer Yi Technology is available at a very attractive price of around 50 euros. Second, because it offers some interesting features on paper. A recording in Full HD, of course, is today the basis, but also a rotating head and a motorized lens (vertical orientation), which allow you to cover a room at 360 degrees. Until then, the camera of Xiaomi does the same you tell us, and for a few euros less.

Except that where the Yi Camera makes a big difference, it’s in terms of its goal, which is coupled with software tracking – understand that there is no physical motion detection sensor. So, if the subject moves in the room, the camera follows him with his gaze. This is exactly what his rival was missing …

But, there is a ” But »: During our tests, we noted that if the lens follows the subject in its movements, it is not uncommon for it to pick up. Sometimes the camera returns to the central position for no reason, sometimes it remains blocked for a few seconds, before resuming its movements. Furthermore, we would have liked this tracking use the camera microphone to orient yourself more quickly in a room, if noise ever comes from an unattended area. But it is obviously too much in demand at this price level.

There is also a function in the application allowing you to create a video panorama of his room automatically, which avoids clicking repeatedly on the arrows of the application intended to control the objective.

Yi tech camera
Yi tech camera

Regarding the quality of the image, you can see for yourself that the images filmed in broad daylight are of acceptable quality, even if the details are very smooth. The picture is much more mixed with regard to night vision. This camera Yi clearly reaches its technical limits : it is one of the least good on this subject.

Besides, if it is also one of the cheapest, overall, its picture quality is worse than that of the Xiaomi camera.
Let us add that at this price you should not count on particularly neat finishes. The body of the device is made of plastic.

On the application side, nothing to report, there is everything you need to activate or deactivate the camera, program operating hours, but also subscribe to an online storage offer. By default, the camera records on a MicroSD card and since it is not provided, it is imperative to buy one – at least 16 GB in our opinion.

Unlike the Xiaomi, it is not possible here to transfer the videos to a home network disk. Anyway, the manufacturer offers cloud storage offers, billed, for example, 60 euros a year for a camera in continuous recording or 20 euros annually for recording on motion detection, always for a camera. Quite affordable rates.

On the security side, in addition to the identifiers and passwords to access his account, the application requires his user to identify himself with a four-digit code (or fingerprint if the smartphone is compatible) to access the videos. A message also appears on the screen to indicate that data is encrypted on the fly. Impossible to say that your data is absolutely secure and inaccessible, but the manufacturer wants you to believe it.

Logi circle 2

+ Waterproof, for outdoor installation

+ The discreet format

+ Wired or wireless

+ The very wide angle of vision

– Very minimalist design

– The high price

It is no longer very young in the Logitech catalog, but the Circle 2 remains an interesting model and still on the market. First of all, the manufacturer declines this model in two versions, wired or wireless. The first, to plug into a power outlet or USB port, has a long cable of three meters which should facilitate its installation. The second works on battery and then becomes completely free of any constraint … if not the range of the Wi-Fi network.

The two cameras operate exclusively on this type of wireless network. It must therefore be of good quality. Another common point of these cameras: they are both waterproof and can then move from the living room to the front of the house if necessary. Logitech basic book one wall mounting kit, but it also offers a multitude of optional accessories. Versatility which explains the high prices of these models: 199 and 229 euros respectively for the wired and wireless versions.

Regardless of the version, the electronics inside are the same, which is not a bad thing. Full HD picture quality is quite good during the day. If your Internet connection is not strong enough to support a 1080p stream, you can reduce it to 720 or 380p in the application menus.

Special mention for the180-degree wide-angle lens that monitors an entire room (or almost) with a product that is not even motorized. Obviously, this characteristic causes some distortions on the edges of the image.

Regarding the night quality, it is necessarily less good … and even fairly average moreover. People detection works relatively well, but the subject has to be about 1.5 meters (or barely more) from the camera to be identified on the video. The infrared lighting system is quite efficient (for such a small model), but very focused on the center of the stage. Our capture actually shows a well exposed area in the middle, but darker edges … and above all very pixelated rendering.

Logi circle 2 capt 1
Logi circle 2 capt 2

We also appreciate the mobile app quality which turns out to be really easy to use. We can feel here the mastery of this manufacturer, historic in the world of tech. In addition to the ability to easily return to the recordings of the day, a function allows you to ask the camera to create the ” recap ” of the day. A very accelerated one-minute video is then generated and can be downloaded to the mobile.

Still on storage, the Circle takes advantage of a basic offer24 hour free cloud registration (the camera does not store anything locally), but Logitech also offers a subscription to Circle Safe. From 3.99 euros per month, you can record 14 days of activity for a camera, for example.

Finally, as it is updated, the Circle 2 offered compatibility with different technologies Apple, Google and Amazon. The camera can be accessed, for example, from a TV connected to Google or a Amazon Echo Spot. The functions are pretty basic, but they work.

Bosch 360 camera

+ Motion sensors

+ Manufacturing quality
