‘Fun’ Domain Registrations Grow Nearly 11,000% in 2021

The difficulty of registering domains with the more traditional extensions, such as .com and .com.br, has led website developers to look for more creative alternative addresses. HostGator data points out which options have become more popular during the first half of this year.

At the hosting provider, registrations with the .space extension, intended for creative spaces, grew 1,330% in 2021 compared to last year. In the case of .fun termination, created in 2017 for the entertainment and leisure sectors, the increase was even more impressive: almost 11,000% compared to 2020.

During the pandemic, other different extensions were also in greater demand. .live domain registrations, for example, grew by more than 200% in the comparison between 2019 and 2020, most likely due to the trend of live broadcasts in the beginning of social isolation.

Top-Level Domain Extensions

Since 2012, more than 1,200 new top-level domains, or Top-Level Domain (TLD) in English, have been created at the initiative of ICANN, the organization responsible for the Domain Name System worldwide. These extensions accompany the website name in your internet address record, making it easier for users to access it.

For Ricardo Melo, marketing manager at HostGator, brands can stand out for their creativity in the website address. “It is possible to use TLDs related to your business, which already indicate to the user what services, products or objectives of your company are”, says Ricardo.

The options are quite varied and can be related to the area of expertise of the website owner. The .tech endings, for example, indicate a business that operates in the technology segment. However, there are also less specific TLD options.

According to a survey by Verisign, in the first quarter of 2021, generic extensions represented 6.3% of the total registrations of this type of domain. Among the TLDs with less specific endings are .xyz (13.3%), .online (7.8%), and .top (5.3%). The .site, .club, .vip, .icu, .shop, .app, and .work extensions were also in high demand.
