Mortal Kombat: Franchise Reboot Earns First Images

The film Mortal Kombat won its first images, highlighting the main characters in action scenes. The disclosure is part of a story of the EW, which also features an interview with director Simon McQuoid, where he shared details about the plot of the new game-inspired franchise reboot.

He said that the film will begin by addressing the importance of the rivalry between the clans of Hanzo Hasashi – the Scorpion – and Bi-Han – Sub-Zero -, something he considers crucial for the development of the story. The 10-minute opening sequence will be set in feudal Japan and will bring the clash between these characters.

“[Hanzo] he is the leader of a ninja clan and is strong, but also at first he is a peaceful family man. It’s like a family drama with exciting and brutal fights. This is the image of the film for me”, he added. Check out the photos published below:

The filmmaker told about the choice of the cast to live the figures loved by the fans, in this case played by Hiroyuki Sanada (Wolverine immortal) and Joe Taslim (Fast & Furious 6), respectively. It was based on the actors’ skills in martial arts, to bring a greater aspect of reality to the production.

Another detail shared by the director is about the importance of the kunai in the plot, a characteristic weapon of the Scorpion tied to a chain to bring its enemies closer. “We did some research and kunai is actually an ancient Japanese gardening tool. So, one of the first scenes in the film will feature its use in this role, by Hanzo’s wife”, he highlighted.

As far as the film’s rating is aimed at majors, McQuoid has promised the motive is violence, with intense bloody scenes. This brutality will dominate the production and will extend to present times, taking it to another core of the story. Soon, Cole Young will be introduced, a new character in the franchise, played by martial artist Lewis Tan (Deadpool 2).

The director reveals that his presence will be essential for the advancement of the plot, as well as being responsible for connecting with well-known figures in this universe. “Along the journey of Mortal Kombat, with Cole discovering where he comes from, you’ll be introduced to other characters and iconic elements that everyone loves so much,” he explained.

“I wanted to make sure that everyone involved in the project respected the source material, the tradition of Mortal Kombat, the fans and the love they have for it”, he commented. The title, produced by Todd Garner (The clash) and James Wan (Aquaman) is set to debut simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on April 16th.
