The new national digital identity card formalized this Monday, August 2

The new identity card, more innovative and in “credit card” format, is arriving throughout France.
In the trial phase for several weeks in Oise, Seine-Maritime, Réunion and other regions of France, the new national identity card (CNI) has been officially deployed since August 2, 2021.

More information in a smaller format
The first thing that jumps out at you and makes it much easier to transport for the millions of French people concerned is its format. The same size as a credit card or the new driver’s license (in force since 2013), this next-generation identity card will slip easily into a standard-sized wallet.
But it is especially inside that things really change. This “2021” CNI is equipped with a datamatrix, a kind of QR Code that allows you to verify the authenticity of the card and therefore avoid falsifications. It also contains a chip, carrying with it the holder’s information, including two fingerprints. This data will be available for consultation at any time by the competent authorities.
It is possible, since August 2, 2021, to obtain this new format of national identity card. All you have to do is renew your expired, stolen or lost card. More simply, a first request for an identity card will automatically entitle you to this new version. Unlike the old format, the CNI 2021 is valid for 10 years. Finally, old cards can still be used in France for up to five years after their expiry.
