It is clear to us that Xiaomi still equips all its mobile devices with this port, which has gradually made it the majority in the market, given that the company is now the second largest mobile device manufacturer in the world. But there are two other manufacturers who have opted for infrared, albeit much more timidly. We’re talking about Huawei and its former subsidiary Honor which, as you now know, is a completely independent company, so we do not know if it will continue to use such technologies on its mobile devices.

And the reality is that the list of phones of these brands with an infrared port is not very extensive. In fact, we could count them on our fingers. It’s about folding Huawei Mate X2, top of the Mate 40 lineup or the recent P50 Pro there is also an infrared port. Therefore, unlike Xiaomi, instead of installing it over the entire range, in the case of Huawei we only find this connectivity in its high-end mobile phones. In the case of Honor, only Honor V40 5G had this infrared connection, so this brand has been rather timid until now. What shows is small, but shows that besides Xiaomi there are other alternatives with infrared port, unfortunately they do not have Google services and applications.

Why is not much being done on this technology?

Infrared ports have been on the market for many years, almost a decade, and if they haven’t been trending since then, they will come in handy. And the fact is that most manufacturers traditionally prefer to promote various and more advanced wireless technologies. Such as the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or NFC which are becoming more and more popular in devices that we control with mobile devices, especially if we are talking about the Internet of Things.

In contrast to devices that work with infrared ports, which are becoming less and less. There are fewer and fewer TVs that work with this technology, even air conditioners or others that have traditionally used it because there are more and more smart devices that are controlled via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth … But there are mobile phones with these infrared ports, and not only from brands like Xiaomi, but also from Huawei or Honor.
