Will you abandon WhatsApp? Know how to choose between Telegram and Signal

The world’s most popular messaging app, WhatsApp announced last Wednesday (6) that users must share their data with Facebook obligatorily, from February. In addition, the company will block anyone who does not agree with the new terms of the platform.

Therefore, many people are already thinking about leaving WhatsApp. For these, there are at least two good alternatives for messengers that are unrelated to the Facebook and claim to prioritize privacy.

One of them is Telegram, created by brothers Nikolai and Pavel Durov, who also founded the biggest Russian social network. The other is Signal, run by a non-profit organization.

In doubt about which messenger to choose to replace WhatsApp? Check out a small comparison between them.

Telegram has an encryption system for private and group messages that pass through the platform’s cloud. But end-to-end encryption only exists in secret chats, where you are notified when someone takes a screenshot of the conversation.

In Signal, end-to-end encryption is standard and even protects metadata. In addition, it offers extra security options such as screen capture blocking, blurring faces in uploaded photos and automatic deletion of messages after reading.

Telegram’s list of features draws attention. There are bots for a variety of purposes, creating polls and sending files up to 2GB. Users also find games, self-destructive messages and can create chat groups with up to 200,000 people.

Focused on privacy, Signal doesn’t have as many functions, but we still find many features similar to WhatsApp, such as audio and video calls, file sharing and group chats. It can also be used as the default SMS app on mobile.

Which one to choose?

Telegram is the best choice if you prioritize resources and have a much larger user base, while Signal is the ideal choice for those who don’t compromise on privacy, like Edward Snowden and Elon Musk, who are among the users.
